11 cattle killed in 3-car wreck on I-81 in Augusta County

Eleven cows were killed in a three-vehicle crash Monday morning in Augusta County.

The accident occurred at 11:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 at the 232 mile marker. A 2023 Lincoln Nautilus attempted to pass a tractor-trailer hauling cattle on the latter’s right side.

The Nautilus struck the tractor-trailer, causing the tractor-trailer to veer to the right and strike a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder.

The tractor-trailer and the Pathfinder then both went off the highway to the right, and the tractor-trailer overturned. The Nautilus went off the interstate on the left side of the northbound lanes.

Eleven cattle died in the accident, and several of the living cattle escaped the overturned tractor-trailer’s confines until they were herded and safely taken away, according to Augusta County spokeswoman Mia Kivlighan. Augusta County Animal Control was on the scene to assess the welfare of the living cattle.

The driver of the Nautilus, 56-year-old Tonya S. Cleveland of Verona, was not injured. However, she was cited for making an unsafe lane change.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 69-year-old Dewey B. Emswiler of Shenandoah, suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Pathfinder was not injured.

All were wearing their seatbelts.

The crash remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police.
