Albemarle police searching for suspected e-bike thieves

Albemarle County police are circulating surveillance images they say show two men stealing an electric bicycle from the Public Lands sporting goods store at the 5th Street Station shopping center south of Charlottesville earlier this month.

“The Albemarle County Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying two suspects,” according to a police statement, which said the reported theft occurred on Jan. 6.

An image shows one of the two men rolling what county police spokeswoman Logan Bogert said is a Cannondale Moterra Neo 5 bicycle out of the store. The electric mountain bike has a price tag of $4,550, although the model is currently advertised as on sale for $3,999.97 at the 5th Street Station store.

Police are urging anyone with information or who can identify the suspects to contact detective Garrett Moore with the Albemarle County Criminal Investigations Division at (434) 296-5807. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact the Crime Stoppers tip line at (434) 977-4000.

“The two were seen leaving in a white sedan of unknown make and model,” the police statement noted.

While county police hunt for the two men, a man accused of stealing dozens of bicycles from Albemarle residents is making his way through the court system.

The 41-year-old suspect in that more high-profile case, Joe Abel Arevalo, has two pending felony charges for receiving stolen property, one in Albemarle and one in the city of Charlottesville.

Albemarle police arrested Arevalo in November of 2022 and seized dozens of bicycles stored under tarps at the house he was renting on Reservoir Road west of Charlottesville.

“A U-Haul truck had to be rented to remove the massive amounts of stolen property,” Albemarle detective Jordan Weethee wrote on one of Arevalo’s arrest warrants.
