Author John Brackett to explore Grateful Dead's lasting legacy at New Dominion

New Dominion Bookshop will present a book talk and signing with musicologist and author John Brackett at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Brackett will speak about his recent book, “Live Dead: The Grateful Dead, Live Recordings and the Ideology of Liveness,” which was released from Duke University Press in early December, and then take part in a conversation with Nick Rubin, co-host of Radio Freedonia” on WTJU-FM.

Brackett explores the impact of the Grateful Dead’s more than 2,300 live shows between 1965 and 1995 and its lasting reputation as a remarkable live band. He examines how a wealth of live recordings, ranging from official releases to fans’ own tapes, shaped the band’s history and popular mythology for half a century.

Revalation Vineyards will welcome Mollie Ann Cox, author of “The Lace Widow,” at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Guests will be able to meet Cox, learn more about the inspiration for and creation of the book and purchase signed copies.

Bluebird & Co. will present an event with Elle Cosimano, the Virginia-based author of “Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice,” and author Jo Piazza at 7 p.m. Saturday at Veritas Vineyard & Winery in Afton.

Cosimano is a New York Times best-selling author and an Edgar Award nominee. She will be speaking about the next installment in the popular Finlay Donovan series and answering questions from the audience. Cosimano also will participate in a conversation with Piazza, who is the national and international best-selling author of “The Sicilian Inheritance,” “We Are Not Like Them,” “You Were Always Mine,” “Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win,” “The Knockoff” and “How to be Married.”

Friends of the Fluvanna County Library will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fluvanna County Library in Palmyra to learn more about the “Looking Back; Seeing Now” collaborative portrait project with Fluvanna painter Linda Staiger.

The collaborative portrait project aims to memorialize a continuing thread of Fluvanna County life. The artists paint portraits of descendants of people of color who lived and worked from Scottsville to Columbia.

There will be information about how to get involved in the portrait project, and question-and-answer time is included. Coffee, tea and light refreshments will be available. For information, call (434) 589-1400.

10:30 a.m. Saturday at Northside Library: Blue Ridge Irish Music School will present a performance and class featuring the music and dance of Ireland. Registration is not required but is recommended, as space is limited. The event is for ages 5 and older, including teens and adults.

2 p.m. Saturday at Central Library: The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Gala is for young readers who have registered for the program at JMRL branches. There will be a storytime including some of the program’s most frequently read books. Readers who completed the program this year will be recognized.

1 p.m. Sunday at Central Library: “Writing Your Family’s Story” is presented by Sharon Harrigan of WriterHouse. Harrigan will offer research tips and explore the pros and cons of using fiction versus nonfiction to tell family history, as well as the ethics and challenges involved.

Fountain Bookstore in Richmond will have a book launch for “Blueprint for Going Green: How a Small Foundation Changed the Model for Environmental Conservation” with author Gerald McCarthy at 6 p.m. Wednesday at 1312 E. Cary St.

McCarthy’s book explores how the $8 million payment made by Allied Chemical after a judge’s ruling in 1977 led to the creation of the Virginia Environmental Endowment and the protection of Virginia’s water quality and landscapes.

McCarthy, a leader in the field of environmental conservation, served as founder and executive director of Virginia Environmental Endowment for 36 years. He has received numerous awards for his work over the years, including Chesapeake Bay Conservationist of the Year.

Admission plus a copy of the book is $26; admission alone is free.
