Bomb threat at Augusta County church ruled a hoax

The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police spent several hours Thursday at Old Providence Presbyterian Church in Augusta County after an early morning report of a bomb threat.

The church is located in Spottswood in southern Augusta County.

The sheriff’s office and Virginia State Police searched the premises and had a bomb detection K-9 unit search the building. Nothing was found.

The threat, reported at about 9:20 a.m., was received digitally and sent to multiple destinations.

The church was evacuated Thursday, and all persons were taken to an alternative safe location.

Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith said late Thursday afternoon that “there is no threat to our Augusta County community at this time.”
