New Dominion Bookshop has scheduled a book talk and signing with Erika Howsare for 7 p.m. Friday. Howsare will speak about her new nonfiction book, “The Age of Deer: Trouble and Kinship with Our Wild Neighbors,” which will be released early this month from Catapult.

The new book blends nature writing and cultural studies to explore the connections between humans and deer over millennia.

Howsare, a Pennsylvania native, received her master of fine arts degree in literary arts from Brown University. She also has published two books of poetry.

The Living Earth School is cosponsoring the event. The bookshop staff recommends arriving early for the best seating. Learn more at or call (434) 295-2552.

Jefferson-Madison Regional Library offers the following book-related events in the coming week:

7 p.m. Thursday at Scottsville Library: Open Mic Night gives adults and teens a chance to share poems, songs, comedy sketches, essays and more. A piano will be available. Refreshments will be available.

7 p.m. Thursday on Zoom: “Start the New Year with Meditation” is presented by author, illustrator and recently retired middle-school art teacher Eileen Carlotto, who has 35 years of meditation experience.

10 a.m. Saturday at Crozet Library: Stuffed Animal Storytime for ages 3 to 6 will include time to listen to stories and make a scarf to keep your stuffed pal warm. Registration is required.

3 p.m. Saturday at Northside Library: A is for Art is for ages 7 to 11 of every skill level. The group will meet twice a month to explore new art concepts, media and challenges. Registration is required. For details, call (434) 973-7893, Ext. 5.

2 p.m. Sunday at Central Library: Puzzle and Game Swap gives patrons a chance to bring in a gently used game and take home a new favorite. Snacks and games will be provided.

All JMRL branches will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Scottsville Library: “Lego It!” will be offered each Tuesday through March 26 for children who enjoy building with LEGO bricks.

3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Crozet Library: “More Fascinating Than Fiction,” a nonfiction book club for ages 5 to 9, offers stories from history and the current day, an afternoon snack and time to chat about books.
