Charlottesville man dies in fatal Christmas Eve crash on I-64

A Charlottesville man is dead after he was struck by a car while standing in the median of Interstate 64 on Christmas Eve.

Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, 37-year-old Aldo Jose Abello was driving a 2019 Nissan Kicks in the left, eastbound lane of I-64 in Louisa County near mile marker 133.2 when he struck a deer, Virginia State Police said.

The collision disabled Abello’s vehicle in the left lane, police said.

"Abello activated his hazard lights, exited the vehicle, and stood on the roadside/grassy median," according to police.

Shortly after, a 37-year-old Virginia Beach resident behind the wheel of a 2023 Subaru Forester approached, police said. The driver of the Forester told responding officers he saw Abello’s vehicle with its lights flashing but could not stop in time.

He struck Abello’s vehicle, and with traffic to the right preventing him from changing lanes, he swerved into the median, striking Abello.

Abello was taken to University of Virginia Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

No other motorists were injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
