Charlottesville's upcoming Fridays After Five season gets off to a funky start with Joslyn & the Sweet Compression

The 36th season of free outdoor concerts on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall will begin April 12 with funk, soul and rhythm and blues.

Joslyn & the Sweet Compression will be the headliner for the first Fridays After Five show, which will start at 5:30 p.m. April 12 on the Delta Dental Stage at Ting Pavilion. Cassidy Snider and the Wranglers will open the show.

The first half of the season was unveiled Thursday, listing dates through June 28. Remaining dates through the Sept. 13 season finale will be revealed later.

The April 19 concert will be presented in collaboration with the Tom Tom Festival’s Downtown Mall Block Party, with hours extended until 10 p.m.

Volunteers from throughout the community work in the concession area to raise funds for a variety of local nonprofit groups,

April 19: No BS! Brass Band and the Falsies and Theocles.

April 26: Drew Pace and Jacob Paul Allen.

May 3: David Wax Museum and the Charlottesville High School Jazz Band.

May 10: Afro Asia and Morwenna Lasko and Jay Pun.

May 17: Disco Risqué and Cartwheels.

May 24: The Lone Rangers and Bro X.

May 31: Indecision and Hash.

June 7: The Currys and Rebecca Porter.

June 14: Ebony Groove and Tre Charles.

June 21: Wild Common and Richelle Claiborne.

June 28: Cherry Red and Ark of Mark.
