Dave Matthews Band nominated to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Charlottesville’s own Dave Matthews Band is among the 15 nominees for 2024 class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced the nominations Tuesday. Nominated along with DMB are Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Cher, Eric B. and Rakim, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Jane’s Addiction, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinead O’Connor, Ozzy Osbourne, Sade and A Tribe Called Quest.

The past and present DMB members named in the nomination are Carter Beauford, Jeff Coffin, Stefan Lessard, Dave Matthews, LeRoi Moore, Tim Reynolds, Rashawn Ross and Boyd Tinsley.

The band formed in Charlottesville in 1991 and quickly built a loyal following with energetic live shows and a popular debut album, “Remember Two Things,” in 1993. Its 1994 major-label debut, “Under the Table and Dreaming,” introduced a wider audience to “Ants Marching,” “What Would You Say” and “Satellite.”

“Crash,” released in 1996, went platinum seven times; it contains “So Much to Say,” which captured the 1996 Grammy Award for best rock vocal performance by a duo or group.

The band, which is among the top-selling live acts of all time, is the only band to release seven consecutive albums that debuted at No. 1.

Along the way, DMB has made a name for itself in environmental activism. The musicians were named as Environmental Goodwill Ambassadors by the United Nations in 2019, and Matthews has been a member of Farm Aid’s Board of Directors since 2001.

To be eligible for nomination, an artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years before the year of nomination.

The inductees will be announced in late April, and the induction ceremony will happen in the fall in Cleveland. The ceremony will livestream on Disney +, and a special will air on ABC on a later date and be available on Hulu the next day. The ceremony date and ticket sale information will be announced later.

It’s the first time on the ballot for 10 of the 15 nominees: Carey, Cher, Foreigner, Frampton, Kool & the Gang, Kravitz, Oasis, O’Connor, Osbourne and Sade.
