Latest CHS musical comes from a pineapple under the sea

Starting Thursday, the cartoon residents of Bikini Bottom will be teaming up in the spotlight to help save their undersea world from a predicted volcanic eruption.

Charlottesville High School Theater Department will present "SpongeBob: The Musical" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday, 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Martin Luther King Jr. Performing Arts Center.

The upbeat musical has been double cast, so consider attending twice to see everyone at work.

On Thursday and Saturday, look for Robin Baranowski as SpongeBob SquarePants, Eleot Abrahamson as Patrick Star, Sophia Lipinski as Pearl Krabs and Sil Leva as Sheldon J. Plankton.

On Friday and Sunday, Jay Lane plays SpongeBob SquarePants, Connor Ash is Patrick Star, Sammie Mayo portrays Pearl Krabs and Ca’Miera "Tiny" Coles plays Sheldon J. Plankton.

The show, based on the characters of "SpongeBob SquarePants," is directed by David Becker. Cory Willis is choreographer and Samantha Leblang is assistant director. Amalia Hicks designed the T-shirts and poster graphics. TheatreCHS students designed the projections, and CHS Technical Theatre students created the scenic design.

Robert Cohen Johnson is lighting designer, Gina Proulx took the headshots, and assistant student choreographers are Demareya Mosely, Samantha Leblang and Sophie Lipinski. Burton Hable directs the Pit.

Some of the student actors are appearing on stage for the first time after spending part of their high school years in online learning as a result of the pandemic.

The production is suitable for families with children of all ages.
