Live Arts will have auditions for “Fireflies,” the second in playwright Donja R. Love’s “The Love Plays” trilogy, from 7 to 10 p.m. Jan. 7 and 8, 2024.
Ti Ames will direct. The production will start with a preview on March 28 and will be presented March 29 and 30 and April 3 to 7, April 10 to 14 and April 17 to 20.
“Fireflies” is the second play in a trilogy that explores queer love through the lens of Black history. It is set in 1963, shortly after four Black children have been killed in the bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
The play revolves around a moment of crisis in the marriage of the Rev. Charles Emmanuel Grace, a charismatic leader in the civil rights movement, and his speechwriter wife, Olivia.
Actors who are not able to attend on Jan. 7 or 8 may submit video auditions.
To get ready for auditions, prepare a one- to two-minute monologue from a published Black playwright of the 20th or 21st centuries. Possibilities include Katori Hall, August Wilson, Dominique Morriseau, Tarell Alvin McCraney, Adrienne Kennedy, George C. Wolfe, Suzan-Lori Parks or Robert O’Hara, among others.
The play includes use of African American Vernacular English. Keep in mind that they play contains adult language; sexualized situations and physical intimacy; descriptions of abuse, abortion and sexual assault; and historical narration of racialized violence and death.
