McGuffey Art Center welcoming applications for membership

McGuffey Art Center will be accepting applications from aspiring new member artists through Sunday.

Prospective members in visual arts should submit four to six artworks that are representative of their current bodies of work, as well as an artist statement, resume and fee.

Artworks are to be dropped off between 1 and 5 p.m. Sunday in the Starnes Classroom and picked up between 1 and 5 p.m. Jan. 14 in the same place.

Applicants from the performing arts also will need to schedule an audition or showcase.

The collective welcomed a new group of juried artists in 2023 that included Carolyn Brandt, Tori Cherry, Jenn Clemons, Gary Colson, Sarah Gondwe, Stephen Haske, Alan Kindler, Somé Lewis, Tobiah Mundt, Jen Poteet, Chris Roelofs, Joe Sheridan and Tammy Tatum.

Their works can be seen from Friday through Jan. 28 in “New Members’ Show,” one of January’s new exhibits, in the first-floor and second-floor galleries at McGuffey.

Also on view during that time, in the Smith Gallery, will be Karen Duncan Pape’s “De-Circulated,” a photography exhibition of reconstructed covers of banned books. In the Associate Gallery, on the first floor near the Starnes Classroom, visitors can see the latest exhibition by McGuffey’s associate artists; January’s theme is “Quiet.”

McGuffey has more than 100 associate artist members; they have become members through the jurying process and maintain their own studios outside McGuffey Art Center.

A First Fridays event honoring all the artists is set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.

McGuffey Art Center, at 201 Second St. NW, has been a home base for Charlottesville-area artists since 1975. It is one of the oldest artist-run cooperative art centers in the country.

The jurying process takes place several times each year, and both established and emerging artists are welcome to apply. Plan ahead for the next opportunities to drop off art for membership consideration on May 5 and Sept. 8.
