Northern Virginia man drowns in Lake Anna

A 21-year-old Northern Virginia man drowned in Lake Anna over the weekend.

The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of Patrick Byrnes, of Vienna, on Saturday evening in what was reported as an apparent drowning, according to a press release.

Byrnes, reported to have been a strong swimmer, came to the lake to visit a friend, the release said, and had been swimming in the water off Old Mill Road. He was last seen swimming out to a floating chair about 20 feet from the end of a dock.

The area was searched by marine units of the Louisa and Spotsylvania County sheriff’s offices, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Louisa and Spotsylvania fire and rescue divisions. Byrnes’ body eventually was located by the Spotsylvania County Dive Team and was transported to the medical examiner’s office.

This was the second drowning at Lake Anna in less than a month.

Nathaniel R. Mines, 50, of Alexandria, drowned at the lake on July 12.
