An Orange County man is facing multiple drug charges after what began as an investigation into a car crash escalated into much more.
Orange County sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported accident near the intersection of Constitution Highway and Grassland Lane west of Unionville on Monday.
The deputies on the scene determined the at-fault driver was 46-year-old Derryl Wayne Highley II of Mine Run.
"During the course of the investigation, it was determined that prior to law enforcement arriving on scene, Highley was observed on camera discarding a satchel in the wood line," the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
What they found on the property changed the course of the investigation.
"Deputies searched the abandoned property and located multiple bags of white powder and crystal like substance," the sheriff’s office said. "Deputies collected the suspected controlled substances. Field tests were conducted."
Those field tests concluded the substances included:
■ And N,N-Dimethyltryptamine, otherwise known as DMT.
Highley was consequently taken into custody and charged with four counts of possession with intent to distribute schedule I and II drugs as well as driving with a revoked license and following too close to another vehicle.
He is in custody at Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange.
