Roseland man charged with attempted robbery at knifepoint

A man is in custody after police say he entered a Roseland residence in Nelson County and demanded money from the occupant at knifepoint.

John Lewis Meredith, a 67-year-old Roseland resident, has been charged with abduction, assault and battery, attempted robbery and breaking and entering.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a reported disturbance at a residence in the 4800 block of Patrick Henry Highway in the early morning hours Wednesday.

“The complaint alleged that a male entered the residence armed with a knife and demanded money from the victim, who was able to identify the suspect,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Nelson County Sheriff’s Office deputies investigated the matter, found the suspect and subsequently made an arrest.”

No injuries were reported.

“This was an isolated incident,” the sheriff’s office said. “There was no threat to the surrounding community.”

Meredith remains in custody at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, where he is being held without bond.
