Wanted man faces multiple charges after Albemarle car chase, hit-and-run

A man is facing multiple charges after leading Albemarle County police on a car chase that ended in a hit-and-run on Tuesday afternoon.

Mark R. Swisher, 39, was wanted in several jurisdictions before his arrest on Tuesday. He has been charged with eluding police, hit-and-run, failure to obey a traffic signal, driving with a suspended license, carrying an improper registration and being a fugitive from justice.

Albemarle County police said officers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by a motorist later identified as Swisher near the intersection of U.S. 29 and Woodbrook Drive north of Charlottesville around 3:09 p.m. Tuesday.

"The vehicle was observed with no front license plate and returned an improper registration," police said in a statement Wednesday.

Swisher, however, refused to stop for officers and continued down the highway.

Officers stopped pursuing Swisher in the area of Ashwood Boulevard at 3:20 p.m. "for safety concerns."

Five minutes later, the Albemarle County Police Department and Albemarle County Fire Rescue were dispatched to a reported hit-and-run near Rio Hill Shopping Center off U.S. 29.

"The suspect exited the vehicle and a foot pursuit ensued before ACPD officers apprehended the suspect in the parking lot at 3:29 pm," police said. "Once in custody, the suspect was identified as 39-year-old Mark R. Swisher."

At the time of his arrest, Swisher was wanted on outstanding warrants in Albemarle County, the city of Charlottesville and Florida.

Swisher was being held at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.
