Albemarle mobile home fire spreads into nearby woods, displaces 2

Two people have been displaced after a mobile home fire in Albemarle County early Thursday that left the residence a total loss and spread to the surrounding woods, requiring the assistance of the Virginia Forestry Department to extinguish.

There were no injuries to report at the scene. The Albemarle County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Career and volunteer crews with Albemarle County Fire Rescue were dispatched around 12:30 a.m. Thursday to a reported fire in the 800 block of Gibson Hollow Lane, off Dick Woods Road between the city of Charlottesville and the community of Batesville.

But it was an officer with the Albemarle County Police Department who arrived on the scene first to find a mobile home fully engulfed in flame. By the time the first fire engines arrived, roughly 15 minute after dispatch, the fire had spread into the surrounding woods, the fire department reported.

The Virginia Department of Forestry assisted in containing the fire’s spread.

Both of the property’s residents were able to self-evacuate. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

“The single-story mobile home and an outbuilding with equipment are a complete loss,” the fire department said in a statement.
