Augusta woman wanted for murder of Shipman man

Authorities are searching for an Augusta County woman suspected of fatally shooting a man in Nelson County Friday.

Katelynn Ann Hipes, a 22-year-old and a lifelong resident of Augusta County, is wanted for the second-degree murder of Shipman man Kevin Scott Small. Hipes also faces a charge of using a firearm in commission of a felony.

While the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office provided no description of Hipes, it has circulated a photograph of the suspect, who appears to be a White woman with brown hair and green eyes.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a reported unresponsive man at a residence in Shipman Friday. Upon arrival, the man was identified as Small, who was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency medical personnel.

Hipes was later identified as the suspect.

As of Saturday evening, she remains at large and is no longer in Nelson County, according to Nelson County Sheriff Mark Embrey.

"At this time, there is no threat to the Nelson County community," the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

The sheriff’s office is in direct communication with law enforcement serving jurisdictions Hipes may be located in and those agencies are working with Nelson County authorities to locate and apprehend Hipes, according to that statement.
