Boil water advisory issued in Nelson County

Hundreds in Nelson County are being asked to boil tap water before consumption after a service outage was reported Wednesday morning.

The advisory is in effect for roughly 500 Aqua Virginia customers in the the Stoney Creek Village and Wintergreen Valley areas.

Any tap water used for drinking or cooking should be boiled first, according to Aqua; that includes water used for ice. Tap water is still safe for baths and showers, the utility said.

Aqua said it could be until Saturday before the advisory is lifted.

Aqua has not said what is behind the outage.

The service disruption was first reported at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"Aqua has detected an issue causing a temporary loss of water to our customers," the company said in a statement, without identifying the specific issue.

Aqua personnel has been dispatched to the scene. The company originally estimated the matter would be resolved within 24 hours.

Hanover-based Aqua has some 26,000 customers across the 191 water systems and nine wastewater systems it operates in 37 Virginia counties.
