Brush fire breaks out on UVa Grounds

An investigation has been launched after a brush fire broke out on University of Virginia Grounds Thursday evening.

Firefighters managed to contain the flames within an hour, during which no UVa buildings were evacuated or threatened, the university said.

The fire was first reported at 5:26 p.m. near the McCormick Observatory Water Treatment Plant just west of Charlottesville city limits and adjacent to UVa’s McCormick Observatory.

While crews worked to contain the fire, the public was asked to keep its distance and nearby Alderman Road was closed between Stadium and Whitehead roads.

The fire was contained by 6:11 p.m., according to a UVa Police Department update.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, UVa said.
