Local health officials have confirmed a cat with rabies was captured on the Rivanna Trail near Free Bridge in Charlottesville.
Anyone who believes they may have come in contact with the animal is urged to contact the Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department immediately at (434) 972-6219.
"Rabies is a deadly disease that is 100% fatal in humans and animals once symptoms appear," the Blue Ridge Health District said in a statement announcing the animal’s capture. "However, it can be prevented if the proper treatment begins immediately after exposure."
The health district said it was alerted to a black cat exhibiting aggressive behavior on Nov. 4 on the Rivanna Trail near Free Bridge in the 1400 block of Long Street.
"The cat was captured and submitted for rabies testing, which returned positive results on the evening of November 12," the health district said.
The health district noted that the public can take steps to protect themselves and their pets from rabies exposure:
Vaccinate pets. Virginia law requires domestic animals to be vaccinated against rabies.Avoid contact with wild animals. Animals to watch out for include raccoons, skunks, foxes, as well as stray cats and dogs.Do not feed or approach wild or stray animals. Feeding them can encourage them to stay near homes and increases the risk of exposure.Report stray or suspicious animals to the local animal control agency.Eliminate outdoor food sources.Keep pets confined on private property and on a leash when traveling.
