Charlottesville man arrested with 6,000 fentanyl pills

A Charlottesville man has been arrested after state and regional authorities recovered more than 6,000 fentanyl pills at a residence in the city.

Jatavious Taymoze Turner-Jones, 23, has been charged with attempted possession with intent to distribute drugs.

The Virginia State Police and the 3A Regional Drug and Gang Task Force executed a search warrant Thursday on a residence in the 700 block of Prospect Avenue in the city’s Fifeville neighborhood.

Authorities said they took thousands of fentanyl pills and a single firearm from the residence.

Fentanyl is an extremely potent opioid, 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine; a very small dose can kill a person. While possession and distribution have been illegal, a new Virginia law signed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin this year allows for involuntary manslaughter charges to be filed against anyone who knowingly manufactures, sells or distributes fentanyl resulting in death.

The Charlottesville Police Department emphasized that only the state police and the 3A Task Force were involved in Thursday’s operation. The 3A Task Force is a collaborative effort between police departments and sheriff’s offices in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene and Nelson.
