Charlottesville man charged after machete attack off US 29

One man is in the hospital and another is in custody after a machete attack off U.S. 29 in Albemarle County Wednesday afternoon.

Frank D. Baldwin, a 51-year-old Charlottesville resident, has been charged with felony malicious wounding and is currently being held at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

Albemarle County police were dispatched to the area of U.S. 29 and Myers Drive, home to several shopping centers north of Charlottesville city limits, around 3:50 p.m. Wednesday.

"Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from life-threatening injuries sustained from being attacked with a machete," police said in a statement released Thursday. "Responding officers applied a tourniquet to the victim who was later transported by Albemarle County Fire Rescue to UVA Medical Center for treatment."

The injured man, whose name has not been released to the press, is in stable condition.

Baldwin was known to his victim, police said, and the attack was an isolated incident that posed no threat to the general public.

The matter is still under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Albemarle County Police Department at (434) 296-5807. Those who wish to remain anonymous may contact the Crime Stoppers tip line at (434) 977-4000.
