A Charlottesville man is dead after a two-vehicle collision on U.S. 29 in northern Albemarle County Thursday evening.
The deceased has been identified as 23-year-old Shahd Boz Al Asaal.
Albemarle County police officers and other first responders were dispatched to a reported crash on U.S. 29 near the Hill Top View Lane intersection around 6:42 p.m. Thursday.
At the scene, authorities found a two-vehicle collision between a sedan and SUV.
"The driver of the sedan was evaluated at the scene for minor injuries, while the sedan’s two passengers were transported to UVA Medical Center — one in life-threatening condition and one with minor injuries," police said in a statement issued Friday.
That passenger, Al Asaal, died from his injuries at the hospital. Neither he nor the other people inside the sedan were wearing seatbelts.
"The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene," police said. "The driver was the SUV’s lone occupant and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash."
The Albemarle County Police Department’s crash reconstruction team is investigating the crash. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the police department’s traffic unit at (434) 296-5807.
