Charlottesville to unveil marker recognizing Court Square slave trade next week

Charlottesville officials plan to unveil a state historical marker recognizing the sale of enslaved people in the city’s Court Square next week.

Mayor Juandiego Wade and other officials plan to gather at 2 p.m. Monday to reveal the marker at the southwest corner of Court Square Park, formerly Jackson Square.

Meanwhile, exterior brickwork and interior drywall work has been nearly completed at the nearby joint Charlottesville-Albemarle County courthouse complex, which includes a new building and the renovation of the old Levy Opera House. The $37-million project is slated for substantial completion by May, according to county spokeswoman Abbey Stumpf.

Excavation for the new structure revealed thousands of artifacts depicting the lives of the free and enslaved population of Colonial-era Charlottesville.
