Friends and family of the late Edward Fitzhugh Anderson III gathered Sunday afternoon in front of the Charlottesville police station to demand the arrest of the woman who struck and killed the 42-year-old Charlottesville resident with a car on July 6.
“All we want is transparency,” Shakil Ali told a crowd of least 40 people.
Ali contends that only a criminal charge and jury trial will give the public the transparency needed to determine whether the woman was justified in hitting Anderson on Nassau Street.
Several attendees have questioned the official narrative, that the woman was fleeing an attack by Anderson when she ran over him.
“Look at that,” said Harold Morris, who had a picture of a car, with its extensive front-end damage, on his mobile phone.
“How are you going to tear up a car like that,” Morris told The Daily Progress, “if you didn’t mean to kill somebody?”
Police have not identified the woman because they have not obtained evidence of a crime, Charlottesville Police Chief Michael Kochis has said.
Kochis told The Daily Progress Sunday that he has been conducting regular meetings with Anderson’s survivors in hopes of sharing timely information. He said he looked forward to sharing forensic reports as soon as they arrive.
“We’re meeting with the family regularly,” said Kochis. “They get to see everything first.”
