A Henrico County woman faces multiple charges after police say she struck and killed an elderly pedestrian attempting to cross U.S. 29 in Charlottesville earlier this week.
The deceased has been identified as James Leroy Jones, a 67-year-old Charlottesville resident.
The motorist, 20-year-old Eleanor Cribbs, has been charged with reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle while using a handheld device.
Charlottesville police were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday to a reported crash in the 1700 block of Emmet Street North, a high-traffic area near the junction of U.S. 29 and the U.S. 250 Bypass that is home to hotels and big-box stores.
Upon arrival, police said they found Cribbs, who stayed and cooperated with investigators, and the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Charges against Cribbs were not initially filed, but upon consultation with the city’s commonwealth’s attorney’s office police announced charges Friday.
An investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information regarding the matter is encouraged to contact officer James Mullins with the Charlottesville Police Department at (434) 995-8350.
