JABA replaces CEO 6 months after naming new one

Six months after naming a new CEO to replace its retiring chief executive, the Jefferson Area Board for Aging has named yet another CEO to replace the replacement.

The JABA board of directors met July 7 and announced Christina Evans would be taking the reins of the Charlottesville-based, private, nonprofit agency serving senior citizens, their families and caregivers in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson.

Evans, who has worked at the nonprofit group for more than five years, stepped into the interim CEO role back on April 21, replacing Judith Selzer who took the job on Jan. 13, a little more than three months prior.

Selzer replaced retiring CEO Marta Keane, who departed in July 2024 after leading JABA for more than a decade.

JABA’s board of directors started a national search for Keane’s replacement after she retired and selected Selzer from a group of “many highly qualified candidates,” according to Dick Gibson, the board’s chair.

Selzer joined JABA after running her own executive coaching and public relations firm for 12 years. Before that, she spent more than a decade working for nonprofit reproductive health care provider Planned Parenthood, beginning as a vice president of public policy and communication in Florida before becoming the president and CEO of the national reproductive health care organization’s operations in northern New England.

In public statements, Selzer said she was eager to take the reins of JABA.

“This is a transformative moment in the world of healthy aging, and I’m passionate about joining JABA where I will have the privilege of working with colleagues and volunteers to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live their healthiest, most empowered life,” she said in January.

It’s unclear what prompted Selzer’s departure.

Gibson said Evans’ career has prepared her well for the CEO role. Before being named interim CEO, Evans served as JABA’s senior human resources officer for nearly five years.

“With her 20-year career in both the public and private sectors, focusing on policy, regulations and relationship building, Christina is prepared to lead JABA into the future,” he said in a statement following her appointment.

Like her predecessor, Evans said she is eager to take the reins of the organization.

“It’s an honor to step into the CEO role, and I’m excited for the opportunity to further advance JABA’s mission throughout the community. I look forward to collaborating with our dedicated partners and community members to respond to the growing needs of those we serve,” she said in a statement of her own.

Founded in 1975, JABA provides a variety of services to the elderly across Central Virginia, including adult care centers, community senior centers, Medicare counseling, meal delivery and health services.
