The Jefferson Area Board for Aging will have a new CEO soon.
Effective Monday, Judith Selzer will lead the Charlottesville-based, private, nonprofit agency serving senior citizens, their families and caregivers in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson.
She follows in the footsteps of CEO Marta Keane, who retired in July after leading JABA for more than a decade.
“This is a transformative moment in the world of healthy aging, and I’m passionate about joining JABA where I will have the privilege of working with colleagues and volunteers to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live their healthiest, most empowered life,” Selzer said in a statement.
JABA’s board of directors started a national search for Keane’s replacement back in July and selected Selzer from a group of “many highly qualified candidates,” the board’s chair, Dick Gibson, said in a statement.
“She comes to us with a 25 year career, mainly in the non-profit healthcare enterprise sector,” Gibson said. “She has spent her career to date helping others and making the world a better place to live.”
Running her own executive coaching and public relations firm for the past 12 years, Selzer previously spent over a decade working for nonprofit reproductive health care provider Planned Parenthood, beginning as a vice president of public policy and communication in Florida before becoming the president and CEO of the national reproductive health care organization’s operations in northern New England.
The website for Selzer’s executive coaching business provides an insight into her experience and passion. With a master’s degree in women’s studies and a graduate certificate in nonprofit management from Florida Atlantic University, Selzer has been dedicated to increasing women’s access to leadership and professional development programs as well as “medically accurate health education in our schools.”
While in Florida, she co-founded the Women’s Foundation of Palm Beach County in 2007, a nonprofit group that became involved in collaborating on state policies and eventually expanded its coverage area to encompass all of Florida.
Currently, Selzer is looking to launch two similar organizations in the commonwealth — Virginia Women’s Foundation and Virginia Women’s Voices — to advocate for the “ideas and power of women and girls.”
“I lead with my values and empower others to develop bold visions coupled with detailed timelines and strategies to get big things done,” reads a statement on Selzer’s website. “Together we overcome obstacles and create opportunities that positively impact the world.”
Founded in 1975, JABA provides a variety of services to the elderly across Central Virginia, including adult care centers, community senior centers, Medicare counseling, meal delivery and health services.
