Classes at Jackson P. Burley Middle School in Charlottesville got off to a late start Friday morning while police investigated a bomb threat.
Students were able to enter the facility before noon to finish the remainder of the school day after a sweep was conducted and the facilities were declared safe.
Albemarle County police were dispatched to Burley in the city’s Venable neighborhood around 8:18 a.m., about 20 minutes before the start of classes.
While Burley is within Charlottesville city limits, it is part of the Albemarle County Public Schools division.
Those who were already on grounds were evacuated, while those on busses who were en route were diverted to Monticello High School south of the city, where parents could pick them up.
Officer, human and K-9, swept the facility before giving the all-clear around 11:15 a.m.
The school reopened and students were permitted in to complete the remainder of their school day, but administrators said that students whose parents had already picked them up did not need to return.
