Monticello Avenue in Charlottesville to close nightly for utility work

A portion of Monticello Avenue near Ix Art Park in Charlottesville will closed starting next week for nightly utility work.

Monticello between Second Street Southeast and Sixth Street Southeast will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. between Monday and Saturday.

“Expect the road, sidewalks, and on-street parking at this location to be closed with a detour during this time,” the city said in a statement announcing the closure. “Local traffic will maintain access to the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes to avoid potential traffic delays.”

The utility work is connected to the redevelopment of nearby Kindlewood, formerly Friendship Court, the city’s largest subsidized housing project. Kindlewood has completed the first of four phases of redevelopment, with the second underway now. When all four phases are complete sometime in 2030, the complex will contain 450 affordable housing units, a community resource center, ample green space and an early learning center, which is expected to create 42 jobs.

The planned work on Monticello Avenue will make new connections to the existing water main in the area, according to Kaleb Smith, a traffic engineer for the city. Smith said the work will require the roadway to be closed due to the depth of the project and the limited room available.
