Nelson deputies say they found burglar hiding under pile of 'miscellaneous property'

A person is in custody after Nelson County authorities say they interrupted a burglary in progress at a Faber residence and discovered the culprit hiding under a pile of "miscellaneous property."

The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed, but the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office did say the individual has been charged with entering a dwelling to commit a larceny.

The sheriff’s office did not provide a reason for withholding the name of the suspect.

"At this time, our Office is not releasing the name of the individual who was taken into custody," the sheriff’s office said in a statement issued Thursday. "However, this person was taken before a Magistrate and held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail."

Nelson County deputies had responded to multiple reported burglaries at 9632 Irish Road in the community of Faber for weeks before an arrest was made.

On Wednesday, deputies were once again dispatched to the address for a burglary in progress.

"Upon arrival at the residence, responding Deputies met with the property owner who was already on location. Based on visual confirmation from the property owner, Deputies determined that an individual(s) was presently inside the residence," the sheriff’s office said in its statement.

Deputies conducted an initial search of the premises but came back empty-handed, so a K-9 unit from the Albemarle County Police Department was called in to assist.

"A secondary search of the interior of the residence utilizing the Canine, resulted in the location of an individual who was ‘concealing’ themselves under a series of miscellaneous property inside the home," the sheriff’s office said. "With the assistance of the Canine, the individual ‘surrendered’ themselves to Nelson County Deputies without incident."
