Outgoing Nelson Supervisor Tommy Harvey pens farewell letter

Longtime Nelson County Board of Supervisors North District Supervisor Tommy Harvey penned a farewell letter to residents as he is winding down his 41-year tenure on the board.

Harvey’s letter was posted on his wife Diane’s Facebook page on Election Day as North District voters headed to the polls to choose the district’s next supervisor. Afton businessman Cameron Lenahan was elected to the seat with 42% of the vote in a three-way race that saw Diane Harvey draw 33% of the vote and retired minister Roy White pull in 24%.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to represent this community — to work beside so many good people who care deeply about our land, our values, and our way of life,” Harvey wrote. “Together, we’ve faced challenges, celebrated progress, and kept Nelson a place where neighbors still look out for one another.”

Harvey apologized in the letter for not being as active as he would like to be recently — he hasn’t attended a board meeting since May 2024 — writing that he has faced “serious health issues that slowed me down, but my heart has never stopped being with this county and its people.”

“Every decision I’ve made has always been guided by what’s best for the North District and Nelson County as a whole,” Harvey wrote. “As I step away, I do so with deep gratitude — for your trust, your friendship, and your support through all these years. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together: protecting our rural character, supporting our schools and first responders, and keeping Nelson a place we’re proud to call home.”

He wrote he is proud of his wife, who shares his love for the county and its people.

“She’s independent, hardworking, and committed to keeping Nelson rural and strong,” Harvey wrote.

He thanked the people for giving him the privilege to serve.

His term expires Dec. 31.

“The North District — and all of Nelson County — will always be my home, and its people will always be my family,” Harvey wrote.
