The sprinkler system in an Old Trail apartment building successfully extinguished a fire Monday afternoon, but the water damage has displaced residents in two of the building’s units.
The Albemarle County fire marshal has ruled the fire accidental in nature.
Career and volunteer crews with Albemarle County Fire Rescue were dispatched to a reported fire around 12:25 p.m. in the 4500 block of Trailhead Drive, in the Crozet-adjacent Old Trail subdivision.
The first firefighters on the scene reported seeing smoke showing from the second story of an apartment building.
"The apartment’s fire sprinkler system activated and successfully extinguished the fire before it could spread. As a result, two units were displaced due to water damage caused by the sprinkler system," the fire department said in a statement issued later Monday. "The displaced residents are being assisted by friends."
