Tourism spending in Waynesboro rises faster than neighboring locales

Visitor spending in Waynesboro rose 10.4% in 2024, the largest percentage increase for the localities in the Shenandoah Valley.

The city generated $85.9 million in visitor spending in 2024, and tourism-related jobs totaled 895, according to the Waynesboro Department of Economic Development & Tourism.

“It’s a clear sign of Waynesboro’s growing appeal as a destination, and it’s exciting to see more people discovering what makes our city so special," Stephanie Duffy, Waynesboro’s assistant director of economic development and tourism, said in a statement announcing the news. "This growth translates into real benefits for our community by supporting local jobs, strengthening small businesses, and contributing to a vibrant local economy.”

Waynesboro’s continued growth is fueled by expanded tourism marketing campaigns, an uptick in overnight stays and investments in signature events, public art and visitor amenities, such as the newly launched Visit Waynesboro app and the Rockfish Gateway tourism district.

Across Virginia, the Virginia Tourism Corporation reports that visitor spending rose to a record high of $35.1 billion last year, a 5.4% increase from $33.3 billion in 2023.

For the first time, overnight visitation surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with 44.7 million overnight visitors. That was an increase over the 43.6 million who visited in 2023.

“We are incredibly proud to see the continued momentum of Virginia’s tourism industry propelling us to new heights,” said Rita McClenny, President and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation. “Through strategic marketing and close collaboration with statewide partners, VTC is driving new demand and encouraging longer stays across Virginia. From coast to cliff, our diverse destinations continue to captivate.”
