Update: US 33 over Shenandoah Mountain reopens after tanker overturned

U.S. 33 over Shenandoah Mountain between Greene and Rockingham counties was closed for hours Wednesday after a fuel tanker overturned, spilling diesel fuel on the roadway.

The eastbound left lane and all westbound lanes reopened around 2:30 p.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportaiton.

The accident occurred near Goose Pond Road before 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Ruckersville Volunteer Fire Company.

"Entire mountain will be shut down until further notice," the fire company said in a statement issued Wednesday morning.

Motorists were encouraged to find alternative routes around the mountain.

"No one is in danger at this time and Greene County is containing the leak awaiting the Harrisonburg-Rockingham team," Greene County said in an emergency alert issued later Wednesday morning.
