UVa student who went missing hiking Slovenian Alps found dead

A University of Virginia student has been found dead in the Slovenian Alps after authorities there say he slipped and fell while hiking.

Third-year student Gunnar Kennedy, 21, was reported missing after his family and friends lost contact with him last Friday.

The Slovenian Press Agency, STA, reported Thursday that he had been found dead after heading out to Mount Triglav, the country’s highest peak.

“He appeared to have died after slipping off the trail and falling, the Kranj Police Department said,” STA reported.

Kennedy, who was studying computer science at UVa, was studying abroad in Madrid.

Mount Triglav’s elevation is a little more than 9,395 feet, and Kennedy, described as a hiker with moderate experience, was attempting the journey without a local guide, according to his family.

His family’s last contact with him was a Snapchat last Friday.

The police in Kranj, the urban center of the Slovenian Alps, said Kennedy’s body was pulled from a ravine Thursday morning. They said it is likely he got caught in a storm, slipped from the trail and died.
