Warrenton man charged with DUI after 'nearly causing a crash' in Orange County

A Warrenton man faces multiple charges after the Orange County Sheriff’s Office says he nearly crashed while driving under the influence Saturday night on U.S. 20.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, has been charged with driving under the influence, refusing to take a breath test, driving with an open container of alcohol in the vehicle, crossing the centerline, driving with an expired inspection and driving without a front car tag.

Sheriff’s deputies pulled the man over after witnessing him cross the centerline on U.S. 20 near Lafayette Drive and "nearly causing a crash," according to the sheriff’s office.

"The driver, a male from Warrenton, pulled over in an unsafe manner — almost driving into a ditch," the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Upon making contact with the man, deputies "immediately detected a strong odor of alcohol, noted slurred speech, and observed the driver’s glassy, bloodshot eyes," the sheriff’s office said.

The driver, who admitted to drinking “three large beers,” was arrested for driving under the influence after deputies conducted a field sobriety test.

Upon arrival at Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange, the man refused to take a breath test, racking up an additional charge. He was held until sober and released on bond.
