Two young men are in custody after gunshots were fired in Charlottesville’s 10th & Page neighborhood Monday night.
There were no injuries to report at the scene of the shooting, according to police.
Tyshawn Davis-Lee, a 21-year-old Charlottesville resident, and Priayer Emerson, a 23-year-old Albemarle County resident, were both arrested Monday.
Charlottesville police were dispatched around 8 p.m. to a report of shots fired in the 800 block of Hardy Drive.
“As the call was being dispatched, officers conducting nearby foot patrols heard the shots and responded quickly,” the police department said in a statement. “Responding officers were able to locate two adult males [later identified as Davis-Lee and Emerson] and recovered two handguns.”
A crime scene was established where the gunshots were reported, and multiple shell casings were collected, police said.
Davis-Lee has been charged with multiple firearms violations, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, shooting in a public place, reckless handing of a firearm and brandishing a firearm. He also was charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer after police reported he kicked and spat at officers while in handcuffs.
While Emerson was arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant, the police department said it expects to file charges against him related to the shooting.
Both men remained in custody at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail as of Monday afternoon.
“The swift action of our officers last night while on foot patrol in the area is a reminder of the dangerous nature of their job,” Charlottesville Police Chief Michael Kochis said in a statement. “While under the threat of armed violence, they acted with extraordinary discipline, locating and apprehending two individuals without further harm to the public. The officers who took Mr. Davis-Lee into custody showed remarkable restraint and professionalism, even as they were assaulted in the line of duty.”
