Albemarle County police are asking drivers to check whether they have dashboard camera footage, as investigators continue to search for a hit-and-run driver who killed a pedestrian walking along U.S. 29 south of Charlottesville.
Michael Venezian, 40, died of injuries sustained in the mid-August incident.
"We continue to ask the public to come forward with any information that may lead to locating the suspect vehicle," county police spokeswoman Logan Bogert told The Daily Progress in an email.
Police and rescue personnel were dispatched shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 17 for a report of a pedestrian lying on the southbound shoulder of the highway. Finding Venezian seriously injured about a half-mile south of the Interstate 64 interchange, first responders transported him to the University of Virginia Medical Center in nearby Charlottesville where he died the day after the incident.
The weather the day of the wreck was clear with no daytime precipitation, and officers asserted Venezian was walking south along the highway before he was struck.
"Evidence at the scene suggests that the fleeing vehicle may have damage to the front end," county police said in a statement.
Bogert urged anyone with information to contact Albemarle officer Paul Quillon at (434) 296-5807.
Venezian’s death is the first pedestrian death this year in Albemarle County.
