Augusta deputy struck, injured during traffic stop

An Augusta County sheriff’s deputy was struck and injured by a car early last Thursday while conducting a traffic stop on Scenic Highway in Churchville.

According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy had pulled over a speeding driver around 6:14 a.m. Thursday when the passenger-side mirror of a passing car hit him in the back and threw him off the road.

The deputy was taken to Augusta Health, where he was treated and released. The sheriff’s office said the injured deputy, whose identity has not been disclosed to the public, is recovering.

After an investigation, the Virginia State Police cited the motorist in the passing vehicle with reckless driving. The name of that motorist also has not been disclosed to the public.
