Bridge over Wheeler Creek in Louisa closed for rehab

The bridge that carries East Green Springs Road over Wheeler Creek in Louisa County is temporarily closed for rehabilitation work expected to last until midsummer.

The bridge northeast of Zion Crossroads is being widened and bolstered to support all load sizes, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The current structure has a posted weight limit of 12 tons and measures 13 feet and 5 inches wide. A crew is now working to remove the existing steel beam and timber deck, widen abutments and replace the superstructure with a new steal beam and timber deck. Once the work is completed, the bridge will be 16 feet wide and able to support all legal loads, VDOT said.

The bridge was officially closed to traffic this past Monday. It is expected to reopen June 19, weather permitting.

During construction, East Green Springs Road will be closed to all traffic 0.4 miles from East Jack Jouett Road to 1.6 miles from James Madison Highway. VDOT does not plan on posting a detour since the traffic volume is so low in the area.

"Drivers should find alternate routes during the closure," the agency said.

Updates on roads in VDOT’s Culpeper District are posted to x.com/vadotculp and the Culpeper District Facebook page.

Current traffic conditions, VDOT’s statewide network of traffic cameras and other real-time travel information are on the 511Virginia website. That information is also available on the free VDOT 511 mobile app or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.
