Charlottesville has started construction on what will be the city’s largest solar installation to date.
Work is underway now on a 262.9-kilowatt rooftop solar array at the Charlottesville Area Technical Education Center at 1000 Rio Road E.
Upon completion, the roof will host 478 panels expected to generate 250,000 kilowatt-hours annually, more than 60% of CATEC’s energy needs.
Officials said the project supports the city’s climate goals of reducing emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
“This project will make a big difference in how CATEC is powered, reducing both energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions,” City Manager Sam Sanders said in a statement.
The project is being delivered through a master energy performance contract with Louisville, Kentucky-based CMTA, a national energy services firm. Local installer Tiger Solar and the Dillwyn-based workforce nonprofit group Flipp also are partnering on the effort. The city plans to pursue federal clean energy tax credits upon completion.
The solar installation at CATEC should be completed this fall, the city said.
