Charlottesville comic book store nominated for national award

For the second year in a row, a Charlottesville comic book store has been nominated for a national award.

Hello Comics has been nominated alongside 33 other comic book stores nationwide for the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award, which will be handed out later this month at Comic-Con International in San Diego.

The award was created in 1993 by cartoonist Will Eisner, creator of “The Spirit” comics, which were published in the 1940s and ‘50s.

“The award is given out yearly to retailers who have done an outstanding job of supporting the comic art medium both in the industry at large and in their local community,” according to Comic-Con.

Hello Comics was a top-five finalist for the award last year, but lost to Blackbird Comics of Maitland, Florida.

Only one other Virginia comic book store has been nominated this year: Four Color Fantasies in Winchester.

This year’s Eisner Award will be announced at Comic-Con on July 25.

Hello Comics has two locations in the Charlottesville area: on the Downtown Mall at 211A W. Main St. and in the Seminole Square shopping center just north of the city at 398 Hillsdale Drive.

The store was originally founded in 2013 as Telegraph Art & Comics. When owners and founders Kate DeNeveu and David Murray decided to focus more on comics, the name was changed to Hello Comics.
