A Charlottesville man with multiple arrest warrants with his name on them was arrested Saturday after police say they interrupted a burglary in progress.
Charlottesville police say Marco Antonio Berberena-Perez, 35, was attempting to break into a residence in the 1500 block of Short 18th Street in the city’s Woolen Mills neighborhood.
Officers were dispatched to the house around 10:51 a.m., where they reported the resident had been able to exit safely while the burglar was still inside.
The officers on the scene established a perimeter around the residence while additional officers were called. After police made contact with the man inside, Berberena-Perez surrendered without incident around 1:20 p.m.
Through further investigation, police found that Berberena-Perez was a suspect in a previous altercation at the same address on Oct. 28, 2024, and had multiple arrest warrants out for him related to that incident: attempted malicious wounding, domestic assault and brandishing a weapon. Additional charges are pending.
