Charlottesville police have released images taken by surveillance cameras near the scene of a Fourth of July shooting in the city which injured five bystanders, including two small children. They are asking for the public’s assistance identifying the individuals captured on camera.
Officers were dispatched around 11:23 p.m. Friday after dispatchers fielded multiple reports of gunfire near Orangedale Avenue in the city’s Fifeville neighborhood. Officers arrived in the area within two minutes but were initially hampered by heavy foot and vehicle traffic in the tightly packed neighborhood southwest of Downtown. Police Chief Michael Kochis said officers left their cruisers on nearby Prospect Avenue and reached the scene on foot.
On the scene, they found a 9-year-old boy, an 11-year-old girl, a 17-year-old boy, an 18-year-old girl and a 52-year-old woman injured by gunfire.
Officers and medics began triaging the injured and transporting them— in some cases carrying them — to locations where ambulances could reach them more easily.
The victims were transported to the hospital where they were last listed in stable condition.
Police have been unable to identify the suspected gunmen nor their motive since the shooting.
Three images from nearby surveillance cameras show at least four men who are now persons of interest in the case. A fourth image shows what appears to be a sedan that police are also hoping to identify.
“The Charlottesville Police Department is requesting the assistance of the public with identifying individuals who may have information related to the shooting,” the police department said in a statement circulated alongside the images.
Anyone with information regarding the pictured men is asked to contact the Charlottesville Police Department at (434) 970-3824 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line at (434) 977-4000.
