DNA evidence leads to arrest in 2023 Albemarle home invasion

DNA evidence has led to an arrest in a 2023 Albemarle County home invasion case.

Jahazi Veney, a 24-year-old Louisa resident, was taken into custody Thursday and charged with burglary while in possession of a deadly weapon, the use of a firearm in commission of a felony and brandishing a firearm.

Albemarle County police responded to a reported home invasion on Aug. 11, 2023, on Stony Point Road northeast of Charlottesville.

"While on scene, DNA evidence was collected that was sent to the Department of Forensic Science (DFS) for analysis," the county said in a statement issued Thursday.

Nearly two years later, the DFS returned a positive match for Veney.

"This case demonstrates the critical role proper evidence collection plays in solving violent crimes. We’re proud of the persistent efforts by our investigators and grateful for the support of our partners at DFS," Albemarle County Police Capt. Darrell Byers is quoted in the county’s Thursday statement.

Veney remains in custody at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

The investigation remains open. Anyone with additional information regarding Veney or the 2023 home invasion is encouraged to contact the Albemarle County Police Department at (434) 296-5807 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line at (434) 977-4000.
