Greene County traffic stop turns into cross-county pursuit

A teenager faces multiple charges after authorities say he led sheriff’s deputies on a chase that began in Greene County and ended in a crash in Madison County.

Dominic Lee Abshire, 19, has been charged with eluding authorities, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

A Greene County sheriff’s deputy was monitoring speeds on Main Street in Stanardsville on Thursday when a vehicle registered 20 mph over the posted speed limit, according to the sheriff’s office.

The deputy said they attempted a traffic stop, but the driver made a left turn onto Madison Road, significantly increasing their speed. The vehicle then veered off into a grassy area near Octonia Road before turning back onto Madison Road, the deputy reported.

It was storming heavily at the time, and the sheriff’s office said, "Given the poor road conditions and to prioritize public safety, the pursuit was terminated at the county line."

It wasn’t long after that, however, that deputies in neighboring Madison County were dispatched to a reported single-vehicle crash.

Upon arrival, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office determined the vehicle was the same one that fled the Greene County traffic stop.

Abshire was identified as the driver of the vehicle and taken into custody. He was booked at Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange, where he remained as of Friday.
