Charlottesville police are investigating reported gunshots on the city’s Downtown Mall amid Night 2 of the popular Tom Tom Festival’s block party.
There was neither injuries nor property damage to report on the scene, and police have not publicly identified a suspect.
Officers were alerted to shots fired near the western terminus of the Mall near the CODE Building around 9:30 p.m., police said in a statement issued later in the night.
The Tom Tom Festival, an annual celebration of music, art and innovation centered around the birthday of Founding Father and Charlottesville native son Thomas Jefferson, is a high-traffic event with a strong police presence, so officers were able to respond quickly.
"Citizens in the area alerted police of the shots being fired. Police were very close and were in the area immediately," police said. "A witness to the event was located and interviewed."
The Daily Progress reached out to the Charlottesville Police Department for additional details but was directed to the official statement.
