The Charlottesville area should gird for additional earthshaking blasts as the Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority work to replace a raw water pipeline progresses.
Contractors will be performing a controlled blast at noon Thursday to break up and excavate rock on University of Virginia property just north of Fontaine Avenue, the water and sewer authority said.
The blast will require Fontaine to be closed for five minutes beforehand, according to the authority.
Next week, crews are scheduled to begin work crossing Fontaine. That work will take place between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. While through traffic will be allowed during that period, lane closures are expected.
The new water line is designed to travel from the Ragged Mountain Reservoir to the Observatory Water Treatment Plant.
The Ragged Mountain Reservoir to Observatory Water Treatment Plant Raw Water Line Project aims to replace two aging 18-inch raw water pipes that currently transport raw, untreated water from the reservoir to the water treatment plant with a single 36-inch pipe. The existing pipes are between 70 and 100-plus years old.
Over the next five years, the water and sewer authority will invest more than $300 million to enhance urban raw water storage capabilities, raw water transmission pipelines, treatment facilities and transmission pipelines for treated drinking water.
Hillsborough, North Carolina-based Thalle Construction Company was awarded the project in 2024. The project’s total cost is $61.5 million.
