Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife took a private tour of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate in Albemarle County Thursday evening before heading home after visiting with President Donald Trump and top lawmakers in Washington this week.
The tour was a last-minute addition to the Netanyahus’ itinerary in the States, and the press was not invited to attend. The Times of Israel reported Thursday that the tour of the Founding Father’s estate was a "special gesture" from Trump at the end of their discussions over Israel’s ongoing war with Palestinian terror group Hamas and its allies in the Middle East.
"We received a request for a private tour for Prime Minister Netanyahu and his wife, which we provided this evening," Jenn Lyon, spokeswoman for Monticello’s nonprofit owner and operator the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, told The Daily Progress via email. She did not elaborate.
Earlier on Thursday, the Netanyahus attended a memorial service in Washington for two Israeli embassy staffers, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, who were shot and killed outside the embassy on May 22. Their killings are being investigated as a possible hate crime amid an uptick in antisemitic attacks since Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel, the only Jewish nation-state, Oct. 7, 2023.
Trump has been pressing Netanyahu for a cease-fire in the Middle East, but a matter of debate has been "day after" agreements in the Palestinian territory of Gaza, where the war’s violence and Hamas’ power has been concentrated.
